I'M IN LOVE! My fellow naturalista Shanese of Natural Curls, Kinks, and Waves on Facebook is always ranting and raving about crochet braids. After seeing her beautiful results, I was dying to try the style. With a free weekend (which NEVER happens) I decided to give my hair some tender loving care. My ends have been acting a fool lately the last few weeks, so I started by going to the salon for a professional trim. The trim resulted in cutting off about 1 inch all around........Healthy hair over long hair anyday!

To prepare for a nice break from styling, I used African shea butter and Qhemet Biologic Amla and Olive heavy cream to moisturize my tresses, and a scalp massage using JBCO. I'm not a expert on weave, so I wanted hair that felt natural to me. I decided to use FreeTress brand Deep Twist ($5.99). The hair was 22 inches long and I cut the pack in half. I started with 2 packs, but had to go to the store for another. Take a look at the pics below to see my process - Just click each pic to see a larger image. It took me approximately 8 hours to complete my entire head. Next time I'll be sure to do less cornrows (7 instead of 14), not to braid so tightly (made it harder to get the crochet hook through), focus on separating the hair out so it's evenly spaced on my head, and only use 2 bags of hair with the ultimate goal of completing in 4 hours or less!

The JBCO Challenge is going great so far. This is my first time using Jamaican Black Castor Oil and I'm really liking it! I like the heavy consistency of the oil, it feels like it's really penetrating my strands and it's easy to apply. I'm applying to my scalp every other day and to my ends nightly.

Part of the challenge is 2 weeks of protective styling each month. This month I decided to do mini twist. I fell back in love with the convenience and versatile styling options of the mini twists. Do you see that shrinkage? BANANAS!!! I don't mind shrinkage; whatever my hair needs to stay healthy that's fine with me!

Are you participating in the Foxxy's JBCO Challenge? If so be sure to share your progress!

One Word.....GORGEOUS! Mad Men Actress Teyonah Parris rocked a gorgeous pompadour updo for the Screen Actors Guild Awards. We rarely see natural hair on the red carpet (Viola Davis 2012) and I was so delighted to see Ms. Parris. It was a breath of fresh air to see someone rock their natural hair with elegance to such an important event. Her style was perfect for her dress - She ROCKED that!

A few weeks ago I went to Sally's Beauty Supply just looking for something to buy......Like ALWAYS! I stumbled on a foundation to achieve the perfect chignon. I love the look of a bun but have struggled to achieve it, BUT now I can!

I started my bun on freshly washed hair. I slicked my hair into a ponytail using Eco styler gel with Argan oil. Secured my edges with Ampro Silk Edges for that perfect ponytail. To add dimension to the style, I parted enough hair for a bang and began to flat twist. I pinned the end of the twist into the bun. **You can take down the twist the next day to have two styles :)**

After I achieved a perfectly set ponytail, I inserted the hair through the middle of the chignon foundation. Then I placed my pointer finger in the middle of the hair sticking out of the ponytail. Now that I've found the middle point I flatten and spread the hair around to cover the chignon foundation. Using hair pins to secure the hair and chignon in place. Place a small amount of gel in your hand to smooth the hair and add a little shine!

A great quick style to add to your style arsenal! Give it a try......The chignon foundation can be found at Sally's Beauty Supply for only $3.69.

It's just one of those days.......A day of lounging around the house or just running a few errands. You don't feel like untwisting your hair just to retwist in a hour. Well here's a styling idea for those days. Instead of taking down all the twist, untwist the front and pin into a pompadour and add a bonnet on the back! Don't forget to place a satin/silk bonnet under the fabric to avoid damaging your hair. This makes for a easy, yet cute style and no one will know you still have rollers in your hair LOL!

Much Love,
Foxxy
